GST on Life and Health Insurance: Exemption Guide

GST on individual life and health insurance

The GST treatment of insurance depends on the policy category, the insured person and the applicable notification. The Gazette notification linked below introduced exemptions for qualifying individual life and health insurance contracts, and the related reinsurance, with effect from 22 September 2025.

This guide explains the scope of that notified change. A Council recommendation and an enacted exemption or amendment should be checked separately.

What about employer insurance and input tax credit?

The 57th GST Council meeting in October 2026 recommended a separate change concerning blocked input tax credit, including health and life insurance. A recommendation should not be treated as an effective statutory amendment. Before claiming credit, confirm the enacted law, commencement date, applicable notification and the taxpayer-specific conditions. See the official GST Council updates.

What to check on an insurance premium invoice

  • Whether the contract covers an individual/family or a group.
  • The policy type, insurer, premium period and invoice or renewal date.
  • The applicable exemption entry and any transitional or time-of-supply issue.
  • For a business, the current input-tax-credit rules and the purpose of the cover.

A GST exemption does not guarantee a fixed reduction in the final premium. Pricing, cover and policy terms should be compared independently.

Frequently asked questions

Are all health insurance policies automatically exempt?

No. The individual/family exemption has a defined scope. A group policy should be checked separately against the applicable notification and contract.

When did the referenced individual-policy exemption take effect?

The linked Gazette notification states an effective date of 22 September 2025. A particular premium payment or renewal may also require a time-of-supply and transitional review.

Does a Council recommendation itself allow an input-tax-credit claim?

No. Check the enacted provision, its commencement and the taxpayer-specific conditions before treating a recommended change as effective.

Can LegalMan help review the GST treatment?

Contact LegalMan to agree the scope of a tax review. A review needs the policy and invoice details and does not guarantee a premium saving or credit entitlement.
