Understand Udyam Registration
Udyam is the government’s MSME registration system. Use the official portal or its recognised single-window route for registration. LegalMan is an independent consultancy and does not issue the government certificate. You can register yourself; using a paid professional is not a requirement.
Before seeking advice, check the enterprise’s existing registration, activity, investment and turnover information. For the broader classification guide, see MSME classification and benefits.
Udyam Registration Questions
Is Udyam registration free?
Yes. The government portal charges no registration fee. Register through the official portal and keep any separate consultancy engagement distinct from the government application.
Do I need to upload a bundle of documents?
The official process is paperless and based on self-declaration. Check the current Aadhaar, PAN and applicable GSTIN requirements for the enterprise; do not assume that a private document checklist is an official upload requirement.
Should each business activity have a separate registration?
The portal states that an enterprise should have one Udyam registration, with its eligible activities recorded within that registration. Check existing records before starting a fresh application.
Does a certificate guarantee loans or other benefits?
Do not assume automatic approval. Check the eligibility and current conditions of the particular lender, tender or scheme before relying on a benefit.

Check Conditions for MSME Programmes

Bank account documentation
Ask the bank for its current account-opening and KYC checklist. Udyam registration does not replace the bank’s verification or other requirements.

Finance depends on lender appraisal
Check the lender’s eligibility, credit assessment and current programme terms. An Udyam certificate does not guarantee a loan, concessional rate or sanction.

Tender-specific eligibility
Review the actual tender and applicable procurement rules. Do not assume a universal reservation percentage, award preference or right to a contract.

Review delayed payment options
Check the supplier category, registration timing, transaction records and applicable procedure before considering a delayed-payment claim. Registration alone does not guarantee payment or recovery.

Check the tender’s EMD conditions
Read the current tender conditions and any applicable exemption rules. An exemption from bid security should not be assumed for every enterprise or tender.

Programme-specific fees and conditions
Check the official fee schedule and eligibility for the particular application or scheme. Do not assume that MSME status waives all certification, intellectual-property or other charges.
Current MSME Classification
The revised limits apply from 1 April 2025. Both investment in plant and machinery or equipment and turnover must be considered under the applicable classification rules.

Micro
Investment in plant and machinery or equipment must not exceed INR 2.5 crore, and turnover must not exceed INR 10 crore, under the revised classification criteria effective from 1 April 2025.
Small
The small-enterprise limits are investment not exceeding INR 25 crore and turnover not exceeding INR 100 crore. Apply the composite classification rules to the enterprise’s current records.
Medium
The medium-enterprise limits are investment not exceeding INR 125 crore and turnover not exceeding INR 500 crore. Check both criteria and the applicable classification rules.
