To regulate the food safety and standards the government of India passed Food Safety and Standard Act, 2006 to manage science based standard for articles of food and manufacturing, storage, sales & distribution to ensure safe wholesome food for human consumption.

Further the government of India notified in gazette Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulation, 2011 and rules thereof.
